Later this year, we’ll no longer support The Sims 4 on Non-Metal OS for Mac or 32-bit for PC.
If you already own The Sims 4 and can’t upgrade your operating system to Apple’s Metal or PC’s 64-bit, we’ll grant you The Sims 4: Legacy Edition. Head to Answers HQ to learn more. (New Sims 4 players won’t be eligible for the Legacy Edition.)
The Mac version of The Sims 4 has always been 64-bit. If your Mac meets the other system requirements, you don’t have to worry about this one.
What’s the difference between 32-bit and 64-bit Windows?
All modern versions of Windows are available in 32-bit or 64-bit flavors.
Here’s a breakdown of the main differences between them:
- 32-bit Windows can only run 32-bit applications.
- 64-bit Windows can run 32-bit and 64-bit applications.
- If you’re using Windows 7, 8.1, or 10, you’re most likely already using the 64-bit version of Windows.
- 32-bit Windows only counts up to a maximum of 4GB of memory (RAM). Windows uses some of that memory for itself and your graphics card might, too. That means a 32-bit version of Windows can only use what’s left over, even if you have the full 4GB installed.
- If you run an application on 32-bit Windows that tries to use more than 4GB of RAM, it will crash.
- The computer won’t see, and can’t use, anything over 4GB. So, if you install more than 4GB of RAM on a 32-bit version of Windows, it won’t make any difference.
- 64-bit Windows has no real memory limit. Instead, if you have a 64-bit computer, you’re limited by how much RAM your system board (the motherboard in your computer) can handle. 64-bit Windows PCs usually have over 4GB of RAM installed as standard.
What does this have to do with The Sims 4?
We’ve had a 64-bit version of The Sims 4 available since December 2015. Since then, you can choose whether you want to install and run the 32-bit or the 64-bit version.
Playing through Origin? It will usually make that choice for you and automagically install the version that’ll run best on your computer.
Why would I want to run the 64-bit version?
The short answer is: The Sims 4 is more stable when it’s running on 64-bit Windows.
The longer (more technical) answer is:
We designed The Sims 4 to use less than 4GB of memory, so in most cases there’s no difference between the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions of the game.
However (we’re sorry, but there is a however), there are times when the game may use more than the 4GB.;
For instance, if you’re playing on big lots with lots of Sims over a long game session, the 64-bit version of The Sims 4 is less likely to crash than the 32-bit would be.
Can I run the 64-bit version on my computer?
You can, if you’re running 64-bit Windows and you have 4GB of RAM or more.
Not sure about that? Here’s how to check:
- On Windows 7, 8, or 8.1, right-click on My Computer and choose Properties. This brings up a window that shows info about your system, including your processor, RAM, and operating system.
- If you’re on Windows 10, you can search for This PC then right-click it in the search results.
- Check the System type line to see if it says your computer has a 64-bit or a 32-bit operating system.
- If it says 64-bit operating system, double check the amount of RAM listed.
- If you have 4GB or more RAM, you can run the 64-bit version of The Sims 4
- If it’s 32-bit, or if it’s 64-bit with less than 4GB of RAM, you should run the 32-bit version of The Sims 4.
Windows Vista and Windows XP cannot run the 64-bit version of The Sims 4.
